Urban Green Council (UGC) Annual Conference: Modern All Over Again

Urban Green Council (UGC) Annual Conference: Modern All Over Again

31 Aug 2015, Posted by admin0 in Events

Friday, October 2, 2015
12:00 PM to 5:30 PM
Bloomberg LP
731 Lexington Av. 7th Floor, New York, NY
7th Floor Multi-Purpose Room

In post-war New York, large precincts of the city were being rebuilt, often with towering skyscrapers. At the same time, the dawn of the atomic age and nuclear power encouraged the notion that energy would be forever cheap and limitless—which led to millions of square feet of new construction built without an eye toward energy efficiency. After 50 years of wear and tear, the deficiencies of buildings constructed in the 1950’s-60s have only been exacerbated. Large portfolios of commercial offices, public housing developments, and signature complexes (such as the United Nations and Lincoln Center) are in desperate need of renovation and revitalization.

As New York City strives to reduce carbon emissions 80{7330b322b9b7d58bddbbaef66cde22ad1f12db8c79c6d80901517aa2b253a342} by 2050, the problem of what to do with these mid-century buildings looms large. This half-day conference will explore both the historical context that led to building practices of the era, as well as business, design, and energy conservation opportunities for retrofitting and renewing mid–century commercial buildings, public housing, and infrastructure in NYC.
